Accelerating Maritime Decarbonisation: Enki Marine’s Role in the Lloyd's Register's MAMII Initiative

The Problem: LNG’s Methane Challenge on the Road to Decarbonisation

LNG offers a promising pathway to lower carbon emissions in shipping, but unaddressed methane slip threatens its environmental credibility. To secure LNG’s future as a true transition fuel, the maritime industry needed credible data, rapid technology validation, and bold demonstration of new solutions.

Our Vision: Making LNG a True Transition Fuel

Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMMI) partnered with Enki Marine to deliver a combination of forward-looking feasibility studies, practical measurement standards, and real-world pilots, aiming to overcome the methane challenge and accelerate the industry’s low-carbon transition.

Our Actions: Turning Vision into Reality

  • Mapping the Future: Alternative LNG Power Solutions
We conducted a global technology mapping study, identifying hybrid systems, fuel cells, waste heat recovery, and battery integrations that could dramatically cut GHG emissions from auxiliary power systems on LNG-fuelled vessels, outlining a clear future pathway for operators. Real-world case studies validated these pathways.

  • Building Trust: Standardised Methane Measurement
We developed a practical, technology-agnostic onboard measurement protocol, fully aligned with the NOx Technical Code and ISO 8178, which is now used across MAMII pilots. This provides consistent and credible emissions data to shipowners, regulators, and technology providers alike.

  • Testing the Field: Feasibility Studies for Abatement Technologies
We led multiple feasibility studies, structuring rapid and collaborative evaluations between technology companies and leading shipping operators, which helped identify scalable solutions ready for pilot deployment.

  • Delivering Innovation: First Integrated Emissions System
Working closely with partners, we developed and supported the world’s first integrated system targeting the simultaneous removal of SOx, methane slip abatement, and COâ‚‚ capture and utilisation, setting a new benchmark for holistic onboard emissions mitigation.

The Results: Setting a New Standard for Maritime Decarbonisation

Our work has established a credible framework, including data collection and validation systems, as well as a risk registry, for conducting pilots, accelerating technology readiness, and providing accurate emission data. We are proud to help chart a course towards low-carbon shipping, with solutions ready for wider adoption.
